Are you in Survival Mode? 🛡 ⚔️
Are you in Survival Mode? 🛡 ⚔️
It’s true we all are …all of our nervous systems are currently in survival mode, let’s face it, going through a p(l)endemic is pretty traumatic whatever side of the fence you sit on. We are all under a ‘threat’ either from the virus as we see it or from the powers that be who are using it for ulterior motives. During times of crisis, trauma , chaos or total disruption from normality our brain acts differently, the prefrontal cortex which is responsible for regulating our emotions, organising us, making our decisions and critical thinking is not operating as it should. The trauma of a ‘life threatening situation’ makes the survival brain react in a way that is purely for self-preservation. We might be seeing people react completely differently to normal life situations and that may be easier to identify in others than it is ourselves. I absolutely believe that all of our frontal cortexes are being impacted and we should all be aware of that. There are some symptoms I learned when studying neuroscience and trauma is that when this survival mode is activated we tend to :
React more emotionally , we may be angry more or more upset than usual.
We become more impulsive , this can impact decisions made in haste, overeating, drinking, doing things you don’t normally do!
- We feel more tired than usual
- We sleep less
- Feel anxiety when we wake up
- Our memory feels like it’s getting worse
- We can’t seem to focus, get our words out , say what we think
- We neglect our basic needs
- We are do things that help us escape reality
- We don’t make time for our self, or do fun or creative projects

-Our health may show us by : heart beating fast, breathing shallow and quickly, getting headaches, feeling run down, not eating enough, eating too much and old symptoms flaring up,
Children are suffering too , no matter what you think you may be keeping from them , this is all around them and they are feeling It too , they may seem:
- Zoned out
- Jumpy
- Isolating
- Burying their heads in the tv, computer, phone to escape reality
- Untrusting
- More emotional
Many of these may really ‘hit home’ as you read them on for you and if you are honest with yourself you will be able to tune in to how your nervous system is responding. There are no bravery medals for pretending that this time is not impacting you, of course it is ! and you're not alone. Each and every one of us is going through the same, just at different levels of consciousness.
Sign up to my mailing list where I will soon be sharing more about how to deal with this , how to help your body, your mind and your emotions, I will be holding a free zoom session so you can help yourself through this time and support others too.
