Its the Summer Solstice and I find myself remembering my years teaching at Stonehenge during the Summer Solstice .... I often wondered what it must have felt like to stand within one of the great stone circles of Britain and Ireland thousands of years ago, waiting with others in the soft light before dawn. Before clocks and calendars, before electric lights and busy schedules, human beings learned to orient themselves by the movements of the heavens. The rising sun, the turning seasons, the moon, the stars, and the living landscape formed part of a sacred conversation between Earth and sky. You know the sacred way of connecting rather than the partying we see these days.

Many ancient stone circles and megalithic sites hold remarkable alignments with the sun. At places such as Stonehenge, Callanish, and countless lesser-known circles, the builders carefully positioned the stones so that the first rays of the Solstice sun would illuminate particular points on the horizon. These were living temples of orientation, places where human beings remembered that they belonged to something far greater than themselves.

For our ancestors, the solar light represented far more than physical illumination. It symbolised vitality, consciousness, creativity, and the life-giving power of the Creator moving through all things. To witness the longest day and the fullness of the sun meant entering into relationship with abundance, gratitude, and the great mystery of existence itself.

Modern women often experience a similar longing. Beneath the noise of contemporary life, many feel called toward a deeper rhythm, a desire to live in harmony with the seasons and to reconnect with the wisdom carried within their own bodies. In many ways, the feminine body itself resembles a sacred landscape. It moves in cycles. It knows times of flowering and times of retreat. It carries seasons of gestation, creativity, ripening, and renewal.

The stone circle offers a profound symbol for this inner life. Just as the ancient stones stand in relationship to the sun, perhaps we too are invited to stand in conscious relationship with the greater light that lives within and around us. The ancients understood that alignment brought harmony. When Earth and sky met in balance, life flourished. Perhaps the same holds true for the soul.

At Alban Hefin, the Summer Solstice, the world stands in fullness. The flowers bloom, the fields ripen, and the Earth reveals her abundance. The feminine body also carries this mystery. There are seasons when life asks us to flower, to create, to love, to experience beauty, sensuality, joy, and the sacred aliveness that moves through our bodies. Spirituality belongs here too. It belongs in laughter, in creativity, in pleasure, in movement, and in the deep appreciation of being alive.

In our Druidess Training, we explore these mysteries psychospiritually, ceremonially, and ritually, weaving ancient wisdom into modern life. Together we journey through the Wheel of the Year, entering into relationship with the land, the myths, the elements, and the deeper symbolism that speaks through both nature and the psyche.

It asks us questions such as :

What seeks expression through me?

Where does my soul feel fully alive?

The ancient stone circles continue to whisper a timeless truth:

Alignment creates coherence.

And just as our ancestors gathered to greet the rising sun, perhaps modern Druidesses gather for the same reason — to remember that we are part of the great turning, and that the solar light of the Creator continues to shine through the Earth, through the heavens, and through the living temple of the feminine body. We held our class this week with a stone in our hands, the ancient memory keepers and reminders to root deep in the body .. it was profound to stand with other women and do this , it felt like we were reuniting 100's of years later, something in our bodies rememebered the ancient self.

"The stones remember. The sun remembers. And somewhere deep within us, the body remembers too."

I hope today that people sit and ponder on the power of this ancient festival and how thier ancestors would have connected to it and how that impacted their psyche. The ceremony or ritual would have been so important to our ancestors and more and more forgotten by us , so important is ceremony and ritual to the feminnie principle that bringing it back in patrichal times such as the one we find ourselves in, feels even more important.

Hold a stone in your hand and stand under the powerful solar light that radiates down on us today and say:

"Ancient Stone, keeper of Earth and memory,
I honour the light that shines through all creation.
May the solar light of the Creator awaken life within me.
May I flourish, create, and walk in harmony with the turning Wheel.
Awen."
